Elevator etiquette. People seem to forget basic elevator manners far too often. Here are my top elevator pet peeves:
- Don't save the elevator for yourself. If you see an elevator arriving and you're not quite there yet, don't wave your arms and yell "hold the door!" as people inside scramble to stop it before it closes. Just let it go and wait for the next one.
- Queue in a line. When waiting for an elevator, stand in a single line rather than a crowd around the doors. This makes it easier for people to see where the line starts and keeps the area less congested.
- Don't talk on mobile phone (unless emergency). Please put your phone on mute, or better yet, just wait to make that important call until after you exit the elevator. No one wants to hear your conversation.
- Keep conversations brief. As much as possible, avoid chatting with people inside the small enclosed elevator. Keep interactions short, light, and respect others' space.
- Try not to bring strong smells. Be considerate of fellow passengers and avoid bringing on overly fragrant foods, perfumes, essential oils, etc. Not everyone enjoys the same smells.
- Make space for others. Don't take up more room than you need. Stand near the sides and back of the elevator to leave space for others, especially during busy times.
- Let passengers exit first. When the doors open, move to the side and let passengers exit before trying to get on. This avoids clogging the doorway that slows everyone down.
